The New Nissan Z Proto: What You NEED to Know + Detailed Analysis and Update

In this video I give updates on everything we have learned about the 400Z since the digital unveil event last year. We get confirmation of new colors, talk about the potential packages available for the Proto Z, as well as potential confirmation of the engine that the new Nissan Z will have.
I do a deep dive into all of the recent news surrounding the car, we take a look at the videos posted by nissan and photos provided by other enthusiasts including Larry Chen. I also talk about if I will be getting the car when it is released.

The 9 speed lowest starting point is the W9A 700. The 700 can handle 700nm (germans.. all practical with names) thats 516 ft lbs. As far as the 370z as a base... thats a great chassy. You get a upgraded trans and a better manual. Its a win

I’m really looking forward to buying the new Z, this car is debuting just in time for my 40th birthday, perfect mid life crisis purchase lol and also as I’m finishing my divorce. Gonna be single again and finally able to get my proper sports car I’ve been wanting for so long. Everything is lining up nicely. Personally I love almost everything about the Z Proto, at first I didn’t care much for the rectangular grille but it’s growing on me. I’m definitely going for the base model as the Type S/T packages don’t have anything I absolutely need to have. Only thing I’m debating currently is whether to get the manual or the auto. For most people it’s a no brainer but for me I have two fake knees so I’m not sure if I want to be switching my own gears anymore. However this won’t be my daily driver either so maybe I will get the 6mt after all.

The only thing now that is gonna hurt Nissan very bad is doing Subprime loans and that's gonna backfire real quick. But these refreshes of Nissan models and the Ariya is amazing and hopefully, they get back on track like in the 80s-90s with fun, affordable cars because I use to own a '90 300zx N/A and 95 240sx 10 years ago and they were very fun cars with a whole ton of aftermarket potential.

Sure, I agree that the naming '400Z' is silly and probably doesn't line up with what the car will actually be called. It's just what everyone has been calling it up until this point.

    • Dave Melton

      Dave Melton

      Month ago

Historical nomenclature has the name tied to displacement from very first 240Z to present 370Z. While the 3.0 hasn’t been announced there has been no suggestion or even speculation of it being 4.0. Z35 also has not been announced but follows the chassis nomenclature used since the Z31.

    • The Carizon

      The Carizon

      Month ago

@Dave Melton it's not incorrect nomenclature because we still don't know what the title is. The two largest forum pages and the two biggest FB group surrounding the Z35 still refer to it as '400Z' because the fact still stands that this car doesn't have a name yet.

    • Dave Melton

      Dave Melton

“Rims” is how “a lot of people refer to” “wheels”. Purposely using incorrect nomenclature because it’s “a relevant keyword” perpetuates ignorance.

    • The Carizon

      The Carizon

      Month ago

@Dave Melton yes, because a lot of people still refer to it as '400Z' so it's still a relevant keyword to use in the title. Also I don't think it was ever formally announced it's a 3.0, or at least I missed the formal announcement, because all Nissan has been saying is "Twin Turbo V6" (though it clearly looks to be the VR30)

I, for one, am glad that Nissan reused many things. I really hope that translates into a more affordable car. As it is, a $35K starting price for a Twin Turbo Z with Akebonos sounds like a good deal to me. I don't mind the door panels, Nissan really made the dash far nicer, IMO. I also never liked the lobster claw tail lights and headlights. In light of the industry pivoting to CUVs, SUVs and EVs, it's fantastic that Nissan even bothered at all!

If the report from that forum is right, I'll definitely take a touring model. Akebono's are enough for how I'll be driving it and I'd like a nicer seat material, heating/cooling, stereo, etc. The new Z is just much more visually appealing to me. If you already have a paid off Z I'd think that it'd be wise to keep and upgrade as others suggested but otherwise it'd be wise to upgrade. I'm not too upset that they are making a "parts-bin" car though. It's keeping the cost down and I think that they made upgrades where necessary. The only option I'm hoping for (although not likely) is a targa top. I'll have to wait for my Z though. I just bought a White 2012 frontier SL that I plan to keep. My Z is about 4 1/2 years away.

So, here’s my 1st world issue... do I still twin turbo the 370Z and build it out, or, do I buy the new Fairlady Z? If I go new Z route, I’d have to sell the NISMO 370Z cuz the value now if my car is around $30-$32k. $3k more and you get a new Z.... it does suck to hear the new Z is a 370z with a body kit and engine swap... hm...

The VR30 and VQ37 probably aren't too far apart in "potential". I wouldn't say a VQ37 could make more power than a VR30....the Q guys are getting tremendous power out of the VR30, stock internals. You would spend far less to get 100HP out of the VR30 than a VQ37. Also, the VR30 makes much better torque, my biggest complaint about the VQ37 (exacerbated by the 7AT shifting too soon and reluctant to downshift) is that it feels very gutless at low-mid revs. My previous car was turbo, and it was much nicer driving, and I have heard the same sentiment about the VR30 Q's, despite their massive weight. Lastly, you must consider what EPA may do to our tuner industry. The EPA is currently attacking tuners and trying to shut them down. I have a tuned Titan, and I contacted my tuner to see if I could reflash it back to stock, because soon the EPA may be coming after us after they get the aftermarket companies (also, I don't like the issues my tuned Titan picked up). If the VQ37 loses tuning support, the VR30 would be a better platform to be "stuck with"

The VQ can handle more power from what I understand. But, the new Z will have more power from the factory and will have technology updates. It's a tough decision for sure.

I drive a G37 vert. When they changed the name away from G I was really upset (terrible branding decision). I Had planned on buying the new gen when it launched, but the name change and the terrible infotainment of the Q60 changed my mind. So, I’m still driving my 2010 G37. Still love it. I’ve not really liked the decisions Nissan/Infiniti has made over the past several years, so I’ll probably defect to Germany when I buy my next car (AMG most likely).

AMGs are something else man. I wish I bought one but I couldn’t justify the price used ones were going for. I ended up getting a new 5.0 and don’t like it much. A c63 is definitely my next sports car. I can’t describe how amazing they are to drive

      @The Carizon 100%. As a G37 vert guy, I’m looking at a C63 cabrio, maybe an M6 vert.

I have had my disagreements with what Nissan has done too. The Z has always been my go to sports car, but the Audi TT would be a nice change of flavor. 😍

It's cheaper to downgrade and put a VR30 in your Z, Z1 is developing kits. In your case it doesn't make much sense to get one, with the SC and if you can get the Rotrex C38R then yours is going to be superior. Get Z1 engine mounts, Z1 transmission mounts, Z1 subframe collars, Rotrex and wait for the nissan 450Z with the VR38TT (or VR42 by that time maybe)

dollar for dollar, the VR30 is a better platform to start tuning. I was saving up for a Rotrex kit, but now the EPA is attacking tuners, I don't think I want to be stuck with that. Get a VR30 car, sneak a JB4, DP's and catback onto it and call it good. I'm just going to take my SC kit savings and use it as a down payment on a Z35. BTW, there won't be another Z after this. I believe this is the Z's last dance.

If you already have a 370 and don't want a monthly payment again then yes. But if you don't even have a Z at all, a factory warranty and the same level of power is great. But honestly I like the way this Z35 looks more than the 370 although I think the 370 is gorgeous.

@jason starek I kinda agree, they have a huge lack of communication inside there... But hey, they make unique great products and that's what I care the most.

Z1 is a garbage company. Worst customer service I’ve ever experienced.
